Earliest meeting: Tuesday 6th October 1840
Final meeting: Tuesday 5th October 1841
The small Powys market town of Hay-on-Wye is famous today for its major literary festival, but in the middle of the 19th century it held its own race meetings. The inaugural meeting took place on Tuesday 6th October 1840 on a course 2 miles from town on ground owned by Mr Dowell of Clifford Court. It was deemed to be a success and initiated a second meeting on Tuesday 5th October 1841. That meeting opened with the Town Cup which went to Mr Thompson’s Saracen, while the Wye Side Stakes was won by Mr Jones’s Henley who walked over. The Hay Hurdle race saw Saracen defeat Skyrocket and Brown Bess. After racing the Stewards Ordinary was held at the Rose and Crown Inn.
